Inboard Diesel Service (IDS) Martinique
I met the owner of INBOARD DIESEL SERVICE (IDS), Frank Agren, when he was tasked with repowering an Amel 54 that had been previously repowered by a Newport, RI, 30-year experienced mechanic in the US. That mechanic did a terrible job and refused to follow the owner's advice on how to correctly align the C-Drive with the Engine. This resulted in a broken C-Drive shaft and a broken crankshaft on the newly installed engine. Frank and his team correctly analyzed the situation and offered several professional solutions. This Amel 54 will soon be sailing again, thanks to Frank and his team at IDS.
Frank Agren graduated as a marine engineer from Chalmers University's navigation school in Gothenburg, Sweden. After serving for some years on the Swedish-Norwegian merchant navy as chief engineer, Frank settled in Martinique and founded Inboard Diesel Service.
I previously met 2 of the senior mechanics at IDS when they were working on Volvos on other Amels at Le Marin. I was really impressed by their knowledge, abilities, professionalism, and expertise in Amel and specific Amel systems.
Two of the team members I met:
Ludovic is responsible for the Le Marin workshop. He specializes in next-generation engines and is an expert in electronic EVC systems. He is also the IDS primary Northern Lights engineer. Cédric is the IDS gas engine specialist. He is also experienced with Volvo and MTU.
I highly recommend this company. If you are anywhere in the Caribbean, come to Martinique. In fact, if I were in Florida, I would sail to Martinique for the IDS service. And by the way, there is a lot more to say about Martinique, which you can read here (Click here for more).
Although IDS specializes in Volvo, you should contact them regarding other brands.
IDS now offers C-drive to Engine Alignment and is now certified by Bill Rouse
15 Jan 2026 from the owner of A54 #152: Perhaps first and foremost, we want to praise Romain Fournet of IDS, who was not only knowledgeable, professional, and prompt, but he was also friendly, helpful, and pleasant to deal with. He proved integral to the smooth, timely completion of the project, quickly sourcing several pieces and parts that were necessary to put everything back together. Romain was sincerely interested in perfecting aspects of the process in which he was not already experienced. He frequently sought Bill Kinney's input and was willing to offer his considerable expertise to every aspect of the work he touched. I would be happy to have Romain work on IBIS at anytime in the future, and in fact, he is already scheduled to service our Brunton's AutoProp next week during our haulout for under-the-waterline maintenance.
Next, I want to call out Frank Agren, who, while he didn't put a wrench to a bolt, nevertheless facilitated all of IDS's work and made sure that IDS manpower was properly allocated and that everything proceeded in a timely fashion. Ultimately, this allowed us to finish the entire project in little more than three weeks, including the time required to ship the part back and forth between the States.
IDS offers Amel owners a 10% discount on Volvo parts.
